Self-Care in the Deep Midwinter

Hi, beautiful, sunny day here in Devon. Even though it’s the middle of December and we’re coming to the shortest day, of course, in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s exactly the opposite.
But I wanted to speak about this time when Grandfather Sun, even though we can see the sun today, it’s low in the sky, and you know, for many of us, because nature is very slow, nature is going to sleep. Animals are retreating into their burrows and dens. Sap of the tree dropping down to the roots. Nature is going to sleep.
Many of us, we can be scurrying around getting ready for the festivities. And that’s okay, but I want to encourage us to give ourselves permission to really care for ourselves, and care for our bodies. I mean, they’re part of the Earth too. So to really, really care for our energy.
It’s natural that our energy might be a bit sluggish, unmotivated maybe, at this time of the year. So my wife and I, we like to switch the screens off, turn the lights down, light some candles, curl up on the sofa, and just dream in the dark. Allow ourselves to doze a bit. And I want to encourage us to do the same, to really reflect on our lives and take time to recoup.
A teacher of mine said, if we do this at this time of the year, our energy will come back in the spring, it’ll be more vital. So happy Mid Winter.
